The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Program was established in 1983 by the White House and is administered by the National Science Foundation through private donations.
The program annually identifies one teacher per state in each of four award areas: elementary mathematics, elementary science, secondary mathematics, and secondary science.
The teacher awardees represent a premier group of instructors who bring innovation and excitement to their classrooms, providing the nation with expertise in research, curriculum development, and teaching of other teachers.
A national selection committee of prominent scientists, mathematicians, and educators review the applications of state level finalists and makes recommendations to the National Science Foundation and the White House. These recommendations are then forwarded to the President of the United States for final selection.
The Presidential Award, the nation's highest award for teachers, includes a week of recognition events in Washington, D.C., and $7,500 to be spent under the recipient's direction. Teachers identified as Presidential Award winners serve as role models for their colleagues and have distinguished themselves with a long history of service in the improvement of education at the local, state, and national levels.
