James Hurley, W-SR science teacher since 1973 and a finalist for Iowa Teacher of the Year 2000, received the Presidential Award in June 1999. Rather than spending the funds on specific equipment or self-development activities, Mr. Hurley has elected instead to commit the entire $7,500 award as a seed to establish a trust to serve students and educators within the Waverly-Shell Rock School District.
