Eric Stover

Senior High Instrumental Music

I teach all areas of band at Waverly-Shell Rock.  I work with the Elementary band with Mrs. Bollman, I work with Mrs. Graettinger at the Jr. High, and Mr. Vowels at the High School.  I co-direct the Go-Hawk Marching Band, conduct the Concert Band (grades 9-10), the Pep Band, and direct Jazz Band I.

My hometown is Marshalltown, IA.  I graduated in 1984.  From there, I went to the University of Northern Iowa where I received my Bachelor of Music in 1989, with a degree in Instrumental Music Ed. with an emphasis in Jazz Studies.

I started my teaching career in 1991 in Waubay, South Dakota,  where I taught 5-12 band, and 9-12 Choir.  In 1995, I moved to Belle Fourche, South Dakota, where I taught 9-12 Band until 2005.  In 2005, I moved back home to Iowa and started teaching at Waverly-Shell Rock.

My wife, Dawn and I have 3 children.  Geoffrey, Emily, and Sam.  In my spare time, I enjoy lots of different activities.  I'm a licensed ham radio operator, and I also enjoy computers and electronics.  I also enjoy motorcycles, history, and working on projects at my house.

Jim Vowels

Senior High Instrumental Music

Originally from Kentucky, Mr. Vowels received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Kentucky in 1992 and has been a high school band director since that time.  While at UK, he served as drum major, senior assistant to the Wildcat Marching Band and Student Director of the Basketball Pep Band. He also served as president of Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary band fraternity.

After his first three years of teaching at Grayson Co. High School in Leitchfield, Kentucky, Mr. Vowels began work on his master’s degree at the University of Northern Iowa. During the years of 1995-1997, his UNI graduate assistantship duties included writing drill and rehearsing the UNI Marching Panther Band while also working with the Symphonic Band. While attending UNI, Mr. Vowels taught part-time at W-SR as an assistant director.

In 1997, Mr. Vowels returned to Kentucky to teach at Walton-Verona High School and then two years at South Dearborn High School in Aurora, Indiana. He happily returned to the Midwest and the W-SR school system in 2000 where his duties include  conducting the Symphonic Band, co-teaching the Go-Hawk Marching Band, Jazz II and lesson instruction. Mr. Vowels has been guest conductor at several area honor bands, and also directs the Greater Waverly Municipal Band.  In 2009, the Go-Hawk Marching Band completed a very successful band trip to the Outback Bowl where the W-SR High School Band helped propel the Iowa Hawkeyes to the only bowl victory in the Big 10 conference.

In addition to his school duties, Mr. Vowels has been the 4th Ward representative on the Waverly City Council since 2008.  Mr. Vowels and his three children Sophie, Kurby and Celia live in Waverly.
