The American Veterinary Medical Association website states,"It's estimated that by the age of two, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal infections have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life threatening disorders. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is by regularly brushing your pet's teeth and by regularly visiting your veterinarian."
When brushing isn’t enough, we offer full dental prophylaxis using a state of the art Dentalaire machine with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar, polish teeth and the dental drill for surgical extractions if necessary.
Caring for your pet’s teeth is one very important way to maintain their good health!
Preventative medicine is the most important part of your pet’s health care. Sadly, our pets do age much faster than we do. In the annual exam, the veterinarian will check your pet from head to toe, review the vaccination history, check a stool sample and perform a heartworm check . The annual exam allows the doctor to address any problems your pet may have been having and recommend age-appropriate bloodwork to help your pet avoid serious future health problems whenever possible.
A wide variety of surgeries are performed at the Waverly Veterinary Clinic. All surgical and anesthesia procedures come with some degree of risk to the patient, but we take every precaution to reduce that risk by recommending presurgical blood work to evaluate the patient’s liver and kidney function and to assess the patient’s ability to process the anesthetic. We also use safe inhalation anesthetics and surgical assistants monitor each patient as well as monitoring them electronically in a surgical suite.
So often we wish our pets could talk and there is no time we wish that more than when they are sick! Since our pets cannot verbally tell us how they feel or where it hurts, we rely on the doctor's thorough physical examination and in-house diagnostic tools to help out. The doctors may draw blood and within minutes be able to begin to put the medical puzzle pieces together using our in-house laboratory blood machines. The doctors may also gather clues to what is happening inside the pet by taking radiographs, developing them and evaluating them right in the clinic. Every effort is made to perform the necessary diagnostics right in the clinic setting to avoid further stress to a sick pet. When specialty tests are required, samples are often sent to the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and the Gastrointestinal Lab at Texas A &M.
When you need to go out of town and need a place for your pet to stay, we have large runs in a well-ventilated, climate controlled kennel for dogs and a separate cat ward for our feline visitors. We understand that it is hard for pets to be away from home and hard for owners to leave their family friends. That is why our caring kennel staff will treat your pet with the same love and affection that they share with their own pets. Our dedicated staff understands that their number one job is to be the human advocate for your pet while you are away. To board pets safely, we do require that they are current on all vaccinations and have no intestinal or external parasites.
Pets are invited to check in and depart during normal business hours only.
A clean pet is a happy pet! Keeping pets groomed properly is also a part of preventative health care. Matted fur is uncomfortable for your pet and can lead to skin infections. Our licensed groomer will keep your pet feeling great and smelling sweet! If your pet should develop a skin problem, our groomer is available to help treat your pet with a medicated bath with a veterinarian's recommendation.
