Heart Healthy Activities

You may be looking for some heart healthy activities for kids. There are many things you can do with your kids to help them get the exercise that they need.

Get Out More

Encourage your kids to get outside. When they are outside, they can run, bike, climb, and do all sorts of heart healthy activities.  You can plan outings with your family to go on hikes, bike rides or to go camping. While outdoors, the kids will get exercise and be able to burn calories and strengthen their muscles. Be a healthy role model for your child.

Get Involved in Sports

Sports are a great way for kids to get exercise and learn team work. Plus, kids have fun playing sports, so they will enjoy the exercise. It may take some time for your kids to find a sport that they like. Check out the Waverly Park and Rec. offerings for the spring and summer seasons.

Be Creative

Be creative and you will be able to find many hear healthy activities for kids. Your kids may not always be motivated to be active, but you can help them get into more healthy habits which will benefit them for years to come. Your kids may not thank you right now, but down the road they will be very grateful that you helped them live healthier lives.

Status of 2006-07 Wellness Committee Goals

Goal Areas

2006-07 Goal

Progress Toward Goal(s)

Goal I: A

Physical Activity

Collect representative wellness baseline data from students at various grades:

  • Weight/Height
  • Blood pressure
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Others as identified
  • Representative H.S. data

The school nurse will continue to collect BMI information on the elementary and Middle School students.  Starting next year, the physical education teachers will collect BMI information from the freshman and sophomore students at the high school.  This process will be done in the physical education classes.  The data collected will then be tracked as the classes go through elementary, Middle School and high school.

Goal I: B

Plan Development

Develop a plan to collect data regarding the number of minutes per day/week of moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity elementary, junior high, and senior high students are engaged in during school hours

We are going to target 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th grade students to collect data to check the physical activity of students during the day in school in the Fall and Spring.  The physical education teachers and the Middle School consumer science teacher will put pedometers on those students and have them wear the pedometers for a period of time.  We will chart the information to use for the next year.  We will survey classroom teachers to see how active the students are in the classroom.

Goal II:

Nutrition Education and Promotion

With assistance from Family & Consumer Science staff, develop a K-12 Nutrition Curriculum.

K-12 Nutrition curriculum completed and prepared for staff distribution in fall 2007.

Goal III:

(School Lunch Program Guidelines)

W-SR Child Nutrition Program will comply with federal, state and local requirements and guidelines. Child Nutrition Programs are accessible to all Children.

W-SR food service takes every measure to ensure that student access to foods and beverages meet federal, state and local laws and guidelines.  All foods made available on each school campus comply with state and local safety and sanitation regulations and through implementation of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans and guidelines to prevent food illness.  W-SR participation in the child nutrition program ensures that all students have affordable access to a variety of age appropriate and nutritious food they need to stay healthy and learn well.

Goal IV:  FoodSold/Offered Outside Meal Program

Specific Goals will be established in

2007-08

Check with pop companies on adding water machine throughout the building.  Adding products (healthy) to vending machine as they become available.  Have suggested to the group who sell candy bars for fund raisers to try something different.  Problem: Revenue from vending machine will hurt academic awards program, assemblies, cost of planners, prom expenses and other student incentive programs.

Goal V:

District Wellness

Re-establish District Wellness Committee--

1.       Ensure membership reflects all buildings and staff

2.       Include community wellness professionals

3.       Establish a mission supportive of annual wellness goals

4.       Develop a two-year action plan supportive of district wellness goals.

We are in the process of starting up our District Wellness program for the 2007-08 school year.  A membership application will be included in the contract mailing.  Funds will be taken for membership and held in a separate account.  Staff representatives will be found from all the buildings and include teachers, staff, maintenance, transportation and food service.  We will start with monthly point sheets and survey staff in the fall about other needs.  We have brainstormed ideas for the coming year.  Part of our 2-year goals include a staff wellness day, staff exercise options, weight loss contests.  We also will research partnering with local exercise centers for reduced membership fees, and using local resources for promotion and running of staff wellness programs.

Re-evaluate and survey student wellness needs.  We will talk with administration and athletic departments about possible facility use for wellness programs for students.  A survey will be given out in the fall and from there we will try to implement some wellness programs for students as soon as possible.

Goal VI:

Communication With Parents & Community

Wellness Policy Committee, with assistance from district and building staff, share relevant details of new Wellness Policy with parents and appropriate community health care providers.

1.        Wrote and forwarded the “Healthy Zone” newsletter articles for the elementary and Middle School monthly newsletter.  Focused on the overview of the wellness policy and provided ideas for healthy snack choices.

2.        Interviewed for a wellness article in the Go-Hawk Eye.

3.        Planned a menu for a  “Healthy Options Night” in the concession stand at the 9-10 grade track meet.  Will include signage and advertisements stating our goal.

4.        Communicated with the elementary and Middle School principals our goal to encourage healthy choices when parents provide treats and meals for birthday treats, holiday celebrations, vending machines and concession stands (tournaments and Middle School athletic events).

5.        Published a wellness article in the Waverly newspaper regarding the use of fitness balls in Erika Ott’s classroom.

Goal VII:

Measurability of Plan

Wellness Policy Committee Chair(s), with assistance from committee members, lunch program, and administrative staff will submit summary report to superintendent indicating School Lunch Program regulatory compliance and progress of all other goals established by the district’s Wellness Policy Plan.

Committee members met in late April to share progress made in all goal areas.  Each sub-committee provided a written summary statement(s) of annual activities related to their goal area.  These summaries have been incorporated into this report and presented to the WSR School Board for review.
